On Nov. 8 at lunch, the final day of ASB’s week-long volleyball tournament concluded with the student team victorious. The team, Kick My Ace, was narrowed down from a bracket of teams from previous days of the event and represented the best of the MVHS student teams. Both teams of six faced down on the grass field next to the track, with tunes playing from the speaker and a crowd gathered on one side of the court.
As the teams gathered, students bantered with teachers, jokingly asking for extra points on tests should they win. Teachers quipped back that they could take away points if they lost as well.
The teachers served the first point, which the student team won. Kick My Ace kept their strong start, winning the second, third and fourth point, and kept a strong lead. They eventually won the set 25-15.
“I had some pretty good hits, so I’m pretty proud of that,” freshman Gideon Burmeister said.
The environment remained relaxed as the second set began. Some students sang along to the music on the sidelines. Kick My Ace kept their game strong, and the teacher’s team were ultimately saved by the bell, giving the student team the win.
“It was really fun, especially playing against my Bio teacher,” Burmeister said. “That was definitely a good experience, but I have a bio test today, so I’m a little bit worried about my grades.”
