The varsity boys water polo team defeated Fremont High School 13-5 last Tuesday, Sept. 24.
MVHS started off strong, with junior Soveen Agarwal scoring the first goal halfway through the first quarter. The period ended in a tie, with each team scoring two goals.
Mountain View pulled ahead in the second quarter, doubling Fremont’s goals and ending the half 6-3.
Senior Jaz Livnat attributed some of this success to Fremont’s goalie being ejected three times and having to be substituted, leading to a weaker defense on the opposing team.
The Spartans’ offense and defense remained strong during the third quarter, increasing the score to 9-4.
“We did really well on pressing them on a dirty team and this was a really good game,” senior Yannis Mihopoulos said.
Mountain View then dominated the fourth quarter and won the game with a score of 13-5.
Although the team won, Livnat said the team could improve by increasing communication in the water moving forward.
“We could definitely improve on staying in the lane [and] denying them the ball, as well as working on our passing to make more accurate passes,” Mihopoulos said.
He also praised sophomore Austin Conover for scoring five goals, the most out of anyone in the game, and for having an exceptional counter attack shot.
“I’m looking forward to more games and more team community and watching these guys improve, along with myself,” Mihopoulos said.
