The Berlin Wall: a wall, a landmark, a historical landmark. The Berlin Wall, constructed in 1961, was a barrier between West and East Berlin. The wall separated one city into two opposing parts, each forbidden from flowing between one another. When the Berlin Wall came crumbling down in a series of heavy protests and demonstrations on November 4, 1989, both European and international history were changed forever. East and West Berlin were no longer separated, and Germany was being freed from fascist rule.
After the destruction of the wall, thousands of large pieces of it were taken all around the world. One such segment has been brought to Mountain View. After a local businessman sent one large piece to the US from Germany, it broke into 2 pieces in transit. The once one segment is now displayed as two in front of the Mountain View Library.
