Boys baseball beat Lynbrook 12-4 in a blowout win on Saturday, March 8 to improve to a 4-2 record.
Spartans opened the game strong, with junior pitcher Brennan Dooley allowing zero hits or runs from Lynbrook in the first three innings. Additionally, Spartans scored eight runs in the second inning alone, establishing a dominant 8-0 lead at the bottom of the third inning.
“We started off hot,” senior Austin Xu said. “At the second inning we picked it up and we did what we needed to do to get the lead and have momentum throughout the whole entire game.”
Both Lynbrook and MVHS scored four runs over the remaining four innings, concluding the game with the Spartans still up eight.
“We played a really tough team [at Saint Francis] yesterday, so we expected the competition to be lower,” Xu said.
Regarding the blowout game, assistant coach Ricky Diaz said the team were playing off one another, which was their goal: to improve on working as a team, not just individual players. All 17 players on the team got playing time, which was a team goal going into the game.
“As a culture, we’re building something strong,” Diaz said.
Diaz said the team’s strategic mindset is to win the week. He said they lay out their game schedule on Monday with the goal of winning more games than they lose in the week. Spartans face Branham in an away game on Tuesday, March 11. Diaz said he hopes to stay consistent, and build a foundation early in the season in anticipation for the close games to come later.
“We love being out here,” Diaz said, “I think the boys are doing good and we’ll continue to try to get out there and win as many games as we can.”
