The MVHS girls volleyball lost to Los Gatos 1-3 on Sept. 10.
The Spartans started strong with a 8-5 lead in the first set, ultimately winning it 25-20.
“Everyone did an incredible job… they delivered, so that was amazing,” coach Oscar Figueroa said.
Yet, MVHS was unable to keep up the streak in the second set. Los Gatos started off the second set with a five point lead, and ended the set with a score of 15-25.
“I think the middle, for sure, needed a little help…we’re still working on our defense in terms of blocking.” Figueroa said.
The Spartans started the third set off strong, scoring the first couple of points, but Los Gatos quickly took back the lead, coming back to win the set with a score of 15-25.
Heading into the fourth set, Los Gatos took an early lead. But MVHS didn’t give up and momentarily took a small advantage. But this didn’t last when Los Gatos came back to claim a six point lead.
While morale may have seemed down, MVHS once again refused to give up. They landed themselves a six point streak, closing the gap to the Wildcats. But then, the Spartans slipped up. They began losing points and ended up hitting the ball out of bounds, losing all the momentum they had built up. In the end, Los Gatos was able to take this opportunity to close the game, with a final score of 18-25 for the set, and a score of 1-3 in favor of the Wildcats.
Figueroa said one reason they had lost the game was because Los Gatos had tall players, and since they were tall, they could defend and attack easier against MVHS.
“I think again, it’s so difficult to get around the big blocks, so our hitters sure need to work on how to get around big blocks,” Figueroa said.
The volleyball team this year has four freshmen this year, which is very unexpected for varsity. But both the coach and the players think that this is good for the team.
“I think each of the freshmen got on varsity for a reason, and they contribute really well, and I think we do have a lot of team chemistry with them, even though they’re freshmen,” senior Angelina Newman said.
