On September 2nd, ASB announced its freshman cabinet and senior secretary/PR for the 2025-26 school year.
The freshman cabinet is Nathalie Zhang as class president, Edith Huang as vice president/treasurer, and Romi Shrian as secretary/PR. Connor Kao was elected senior secretary/PR.
The cabinets act as the representatives for their respective grades during student government meetings in addition to being the people that organize events and boost school spirit during rallies.
The sophomore and junior cabinets were already determined in elections held in February of last year. The reason that ASB held the senior secretary election now is because they had been unable to elect anyone to the position last school year, said ASB president Kate McKinley.
ASB student representative Claire Schwarzhoff said these start of school year elections are not uncommon—especially for the senior cabinet— having held multiple for the Class of 2025 last year.
“People were so busy with what was going on junior year that they weren’t able to apply,” Schwarzhoff said. “The reason why there’s more people this time is because I think seniors right now have a little bit less on their plate.”
As the seniors finished with their final election, the class of 2029 got to have their first.
McKinley said ASB changed the election schedule last year, moving the freshman election from winter of the previous school year to fall of students’ freshman year. Previously, the freshman cabinet had been chosen by the outgoing seniors, but now freshmen are able to elect their own representatives.
“We realized that it’s really important that [class cabinet positions] are voted on by the student body,” McKinley said, “because as student representatives, the students should get a say in who is representing them.”
Even though the Freshmen may have the least experience with MVHS ASB, both Schwarzhoff and McKinley agreed that it is one of the most important elections for this year.
McKinley said freshman and underclassmen often have felt underrepresented in ASB, and these elections should help to increase their voice in student government.
Schwarzhoff added that a big part of ASB is the community and the results of the freshman election help determine how they build that community this year.
“Once [the freshman] join,” she said, “I think the class kind of becomes complete.”
