The MVHS girls soccer team defeated Gunn 2-1 in a comeback win on senior night on Feb. 12.
Before the game started, the team celebrated the six graduating seniors: Ajuni Chohan, Scarlett Thornton, Natalie Lien, Meera Mathew, Alex Markova, and Kalea Dwelle.
“I thought we brought it really well, especially since it was senior night,” Dwelle said. “We played for each other, and we were able to push through and get the [win] for one another.”
Gunn started the game in control as they scored the first goal off of a counterattack in the 15th minute.
The game remained relatively close until freshman forward Charlotte Higgins capitalized on a loose ball in Gunn’s box in the 35th minute, slotting it in to tie the game at 1-1.
Head coach Jeff Panos said that it is important that the team learn how to play from a deficit, so he was very happy with how the team reacted.
Coming out of halftime, the Spartans’ strong offensive momentum continued. One minute into the second half, Higgins scored her second of the game. The match stayed close throughout the remainder of the second half, with sophomore goalkeeper Madeline Huang making multiple key saves to end the game 2-1 in favor of MVHS. Panos said that the defense has been consistently strong the entire season.
“If we can get a lead, then I think our defense will do a very nice job protecting that lead,” Panos said.
Looking to the future, Dwelle and Panos both have their sights set on CCS playoffs.
“I think it really motivated us to keep going because we wanted to win for our seniors and push through for each other so we can qualify for CCS,” Dwelle said.
