The MVHS girls basketball team beat Cupertino 41-26 in a dominant performance on Friday, Feb. 7, and celebrated the team’s seniors for senior night. A notable achievement from the game was senior guard Alana Hernandez scoring her 1000th point, which was celebrated after the game.
Before the game started, cheerleaders formed a path for the seniors to walk through with their families, drawing cheers from the crowd.
“I just felt so much love and support from all my teammates, and just in general, the community,” senior guard Ellie Westgate said.
Westgate said that there were some nerves in the first half, as the Spartans were trying to keep first place in the league over Cupertino’s second. The game began with the Pioneers taking the lead with a two-pointer, but Mountain View quickly evened the score and began to create a lead of their own. The first quarter ended 10–7 in Mountain View’s favor, and the Spartans kept the momentum to finish the first half with a comfortable lead.
The Spartans finished the third period 29-18 and stayed strong in the final quarter. Hernandez scored a final layup in the dying seconds, which she said was her thousandth point. The game ended 41-26 in favor of MVHS.
Hernandez said she was thankful to her fellow seniors for working as hard as they did, to the underclassmen and juniors for helping run senior night, and to the freshman for working hard and working together on the varsity team.
“I’m just so thankful for the season I had,” Hernandez said. “I worked really hard and I think a lot of the girls here worked really hard. I’m thankful to leave a legacy on this team, and to be where I am currently at, hopefully going to college for basketball as well.”
