The boys soccer team defeated Fremont in a 4-0 shutout on Jan. 22.
About 15 minutes into the match, a MVHS foul gave Fremont a free kick just outside the box, but it was not converted. About halfway through the first half, senior forward Wesley Liu placed a shot on goal, but the Firebird goalkeeper saved it to keep the score even at 0. Two minutes later, Liu was fouled in the box, leading to a penalty kick. Liu scored, making the score 1-0.
“It was a really good through ball by Patrick, our center back, to me just across the field,” Liu said. “I took a touch in and beat my man. I got a [penalty kick] out of it, and I put it away,”
With 15 minutes left in the half, forward Caleb Toney scored a second goal, giving MVHS a 2-0 lead to end the period.
“It’s a good lead, but we were looking for more in the second half, because we wanted to seal the deal,” forward Akshay Chugh said.
In the 59th minute, Toney scored his second goal, increasing the Spartan lead to three.
Three minutes later, senior forward Akshay Chugh scored Mountain View’s fourth and final goal of the game.
The Spartans lost to Los Gatos the week prior in their first loss of the season. This win was a bounce-back performance for the team.
“We’re still in first place,” Chugh said. “It’s a great feeling, but we got work to do on Friday.”
