The MVHS boys soccer team defeated the rival Los Altos Eagles 1-0 in their first league game on Jan. 3.
“Los Altos has a really good team,” head Coach Jim McGuirk said. “So I’m pretty happy to come away with the win for sure.”
The first half was even-matched between the two teams as both teams shared possession of the ball for long stretches of time. After the half ended, the score was tied at 0-0.
In the 42nd minute, junior midfielder Cyrus Shafie capitalized off of a deflection by an Eagle defender and chipped the goalkeeper to score the game’s first goal.
McGuirk said that he decided to switch positions for some of the players, one of which included moving Shafie to center forward.
Towards the end of the game, the Spartans began to drop off and remain in their own half, mainly focusing on denying Los Altos an equalizer. Junior Aksel Adermann said that junior defender Brayden Graham and senior goalkeeper Parker Lunn both had excellent performances, shutting down the Eagles’ attack. The match ended 1-0 in favor of MVHS.
This win extends the Spartans’ unbeaten streak to seven games, in which they have only conceded two goals in total.
“It’s really important to be mentally focused and ready for each game,” Adermann said. “All the games from now on are all going to be tough and important.”
