The MVHS girls soccer team lost 0-1 in an away game against Los Altos on Jan. 3 in a close match.
Los Altos kicked off the first half, and both teams were evenly matched. With a little over 16 minutes left in the first half, Los Altos scored a goal, giving the Eagles a one goal lead.
The Spartans were quick to react and rushed to the center circle to get back into action, quickly launching a counterattack. The Spartans kept up their intensity, but the Eagles’ defense rose to the challenge and the MVHS offense was unable to score.
Freshman Charlotte Higgins dribbled down the wing and crossed the ball into the box, but it was slightly out of reach for a forward to connect with. For the final few minutes of the half, the Spartans took a few more shots, though none were close or powerful enough to make it past Los Altos goalkeeper Tyra Bogan.
“We knew that Mountain View was going to be coming for us,” Bogan said.
She said that the Eagles’ strategy was to keep the ball in possession, remain compact, and finish on any chance they might get.
“We started playing really long balls [in the first half], and that wasn’t really working well,” senior Spartan defender Meera Mathew said.
The first half ended with sophomore MVHS goalkeeper Madeline Huang clearing the ball away from a Los Altos player dribbling into the box.
Halfway through the second half, a Los Altos attacker took a tumble over the Spartan goalkeeper, but the game soon resumed. In the remainder of the second half, Los Altos kept their defense strong, and the whistle eventually blew.
“I see a lot of growth in our team,” Mathew said.
She said that although it wasn’t the desired result, the team was certainly going to keep improving.
