On the evening of Friday, January 17, the Mountain View High School basketball program held a quad night. At quad nights, each team (JV and Varsity, both boys and girls) play in consecutive games against the same school, in this case Milpitas High School. These nights provide a rare opportunity for the MVHS fanbase to watch or support all the basketball teams in one night. The games also seem to have a higher level of energy in comparison to non quad night games.
In the first game of the night, JV boys’ basketball struggled and eventually fell to Milpitas by a 13 point deficit.
The next game involved the JV girls programs from each school. This game ended entirely differently; the MVHS JV girls dominated Milpitas, led by Sophomore Jovana Ivanic in a
55-20 victory.
Girls Varsity followed suit, taking care of business against a clearly weaker Milpitas team. Juniors Jayme Hughes and Karen Kauffman led the way to the 68-35 victory.
The last game of the night got off to a poor start for the Spartans; after only mounting 3 points in a slow first quarter, they saw themselves down 9 after 1. Shooting continued to let the team down well into the 2nd quarter: the Spartans hit their first three point shot with fewer than 2 minutes remaining in the half.
The second half started much like the first: Milpitas widened their lead going into the 4th quarter. Late in the 4th quarter, the Spartans started clicking: hitting shots and crawling their way back into the game. However, MVHS boys’ Varsity went on to lose 44-55. Even with the disappointing result, MVHS students supported and cheered the whole game, even giving a rousing standing ovation as defeat became clear.
