Oscar Portillo, a junior at Alta Vista High School, passed away after he was in a car crash along with his family, who all survived aside from Oscar, Nov. 26.
Kayla McHenry, former LAHS student, organized a GoFundMe fundraiser to help his family pay for his funeral expenses. At the time of the publication of this article, over $24,000 have been raised.
“Oscar Portillo was best known and loved for his contagious laugh and sense of humor,” wrote McHenry on the GoFundMe’s information section. “Being a student that was involved immensely with programs like “Dreams and Futures” and “Fly Leadership” program, he had friends from every part of his life.”
Portillo started as a student at LAHS before transferring to AVHS. According to Principal David Grissom, he was quite close with several students at MVHS as well. The school has organized for counseling resources to be available to students who may need help coping with Portillo’s loss.
