Immigration reform activist and journalist Jose Vargas was arrested at the Minneapolis-St. Paul Airport Friday morning at 10:49 on charges of driving without a valid driver’s license.
Vargas, who came out as openly homosexual while attending Mountain View High School, revealed his undocumented status in a New York Times article in the summer of 2011.
The Hennepin County Jail, which Vargas was booked into, participates in Secure Communities, a program focusing on reporting undocumented immigrants to U.S Immigration and Customs Enforcement.
Vargas, released at 1:34 in the afternoon, tweeted later that day:
“Thank you to everyone for your support, I am fine.”
Vargas will appear in the Hennepin County District Court on October 18.
Information for this article was collected from non-profit news organization MinnPost and ABC News.
An in depth article will appear as details are revealed.
