Boys volleyball handles inexperienced Los Altos with ease

Boys volleyball handles inexperienced Los Altos with ease

Tuesday night marked the second game of the season for Spartan Boys Volleyball against none other than rival school Los Altos High. In contrast to other contests between the two schools, however, this pre-season bout between the teams did not carry the same hype and importance that most games between the two schools possess. Los Altos, a first year program in the boys volleyball department, was no match for an experienced Mountain View squad.

“Our experience really paid off,” Mountain View Coach Mac Chen said. “They’re a first year program so they’re still going through the process of trying to become a team like us.”

After a serve by freshman Colton Stearns that fell in between two seemingly confused Los Altos defensive specialists, it was apparent that Los Altos was in for a long game. This was only the start of a series of mistakes for Los Altos who, besides struggling with errors on their own side, also had trouble getting any of their hits past the Mountain View defensemen. The only times that Los Altos were able to put points up on the board seemed to be results of mistakes by Mountain View like a missed hit that didn’t make it over the net.

The Spartans finished off the Eagles in the first set (25-10), with an explosive cross court spike by senior Kurt Dentinger. The second and third games were no different as they dominated the visiting Eagles with power and skill resulting in 25-12 and 25-17 victories.

Besides a confidence boost and increased morale for the team, it was exciting for Coach Mac Chen to see contributions from everyone on the team. Four year varsity senior Kurt Dentinger showed that he is still a force to be reckoned with at the opposite position and freshman Colton Stearns made his first appearance with the varsity team.

With two wins under their belt to start the season, the team looks forward to the rest of the season and what they can accomplish.

“Any win is a good win for us,” Coach Mac concluded. “We just have to keep the momentum going.”
