Renovation of the Mountain View Community Center is a $23.5 million project, scheduled to be completed by spring of 2018. The remodeling began on Aug. 11, however, actual reconstruction started in September.

The construction will be conducted by BMH Construction, a company that specializes in the renovations of schools and historical sites.

The remodeled community center will include a host of new rooms, including two additional multipurpose rooms, a new kitchen attached to the social hall, restrooms, and a social hall that will hold up to 250 people. It will also have a outdoor patio overlooking Rengstorff park and a new preschool center.

“We are moving walls and moving program areas around to make it better for our community,” John Marchant said. Marchant is the recreational manager for the community center and oversees the renovation.

Marchant also says that this renovation is addressing existing problems, such as outdated plumbing, electrical problems, accessibility, and a lack of elevators.

Another part of the project includes new traffic signals on Rengstorff and Stanford avenues to increase safety. There have been past incidents due to a lack of signals.

The community center was closed in August, and the senior center has been relocated to the opposite side of Rengstorff park. The front desk was moved there along with many staff members.

The preschool and teen center have been moved to the the View Teen Center and other fall programs have been moved to community buildings around the city, including the Adobe building.

Marchant said that they specifically chose to start renovation during the transition into their fall programs because this is usually when the community center is not as busy. This allowed for all of the summer programs to finish in the original center and the fall programs to be held in other locations.

“We are absolutely excited about being able to provide the community with a new space,” Marchant said.
